Around the Club

Boyle GAA were delighted to receive sponsorship from an Anonymous donor towards the purchase of a new set of training gear for the Senior Mens team. We chose to highlight the GAA healthy club initiative and the Planet Youth project on the tops as the donor was concerned about the increased normalisation of substance abuse in society, and in particular, in the GAA family. Planet Youth is a public health initiative currently operating in Roscommon, Mayo, and Galway. It’s based on the highly successful Icelandic primary prevention model which uses an innovative approach to reduce underage substance use rates in Iceland, and it has helped to bring Iceland from the highest rate in the world to the lowest. The primary prevention approach will be used here to help improve health outcomes for all of our school-going population. Thanks to Emmet Major, the Planet Youth Coordinator, who joined us in the Clubhouse to speak with the Senior Team about the project. Boyle GAA are delighted to support such a positive undertaking of this nature. We encourage you to view further information about the project which can be found at www.planetyouth.ie.

- It was a pleasure to host the ZuCar LGFA All Ireland Minor ‘B’ Championship Semi Final between Sligo and Longford on July 20th. Thank you to everyone that helped in getting the pitch and grounds prepped ahead of the game including members of the Boyle LGFA and Boyle GAA Committees.

O’Rourke Cup Final - Match Report

Congratulations to our McGovern Civils Senior Men following their three-point Division 1 League Final victory over Western Gaels in Ballinameen on Sunday afternoon.

Boyle made the brighter start to the game, with Donie Smith (2) and Cian McKeon (a mark) ensuring a three-point lead after just five minutes. Western Gaels responded with a free. A minute later, Boyle looked to be in for a certain goal, however, Western Gaels prevented Donie Smith’s goal-bound shot from hitting the back of the net and sent the ball out for a 45. Cathal Feely’s resulting 45 gave Boyle a three-point advantage once more. A Western Gaels free was sandwiched between two Colin Goldrick points on 15 minutes. A point apiece from Niall Higgins and Luke Hester for Western Gaels caused some worry for Boyle before some vital defending by Killian Cox and Oisín Cregg dispossessed a Western Gaels attack. Cregg’s pass found Colin Godrick, who was at his accurate best. Donie Smith (a free) and Dylan East rounded off the first scoring as Boyle held a three-point lead at half-time nine points to six.

Two Western Gaels frees early in the second half put the margin at one before Cian McKeon steadied the nerves of the large Boyle support with a well-taken free. Colin Goldrick raised the white flag once again before Oisín Cregg’s left-footed strike split the uprights. Western Gaels kept plugging away with points from play and placed balls. On 57 minutes, Luke Glennon’s hanging shot was gathered by Killian Cox on the 21-yard line. Cox was fouled for a free which Donie Smith made no mistake in converting.

Western Gaels once again scored from play as the game entered five minutes of injury time. They looked to be in for a certain goal two minutes into the additional period, however Conor Flanagan judged the final pass to perfection to prevent it. Play continued, and Boyle launched an attack of their own with Colin Goldrick winning and scoring a mark. Western Gaels had their last score of the game on 63 minutes before Boyle’s Goldrick (from play) rounded off his and the afternoon’s scoring with a delicate effort from 30 metres to ensure a three-point victory.

Rise & Shine Superstars

As we had to postpone last weeks nursery, Our Nursery programme had their last nursery training on Monday evening.  Even in such a short time, we have seen such improvement on the children’s basic skills and it isn’t just down to the coaching on the day its down to the parents and children during the week practicing what your coaches have showed them and being better at it the following week. Thanks to Lorna Hanmore for her great work in organising this again this year and her team of coaches , the 60 + kids and their parents.

O’Rourke Cup Semi-Final

Our McGovern Civils Snr Men qualified the O'Rourke Cup Division 1 final following a one-point victory over Clan na nGael in Rockfield on Saturday evening.

Clan opened scoring with a point from play and quickly followed up by taking advantage of two frees - but then the tables turned and we took advantage. Donie Smith popped his first free over with 7 minutes gone and that was the catalyst for Boyle's performance thereafter.

Dylan East and Mark O'Connor both split the uprights before Colin Goldrick added three points of his own (two from frees and one from play) just before half-time.

Boyle held a two-point lead at the interval 6 points to four.

It was Clan who scored the first point of the second half to reduce the margin.

However, two Donie Smith frees stalled the South Roscommon club's comeback.

Following excellent defending from the Boyle backs in which they won possession in the Boyle half of the pitch, Mark O’Donoghue put through a pass to Killian Cox, who was fouled inside the 13-metre line and so a penalty was awarded to Boyle.

The resulting penalty was emphatically dispatched by Donie Smith.

Clan added three frees and a point from play in response, but it was not enough to claw back the margin as Boyle held for a one-point victory.

Full Time score: Boyle 1-08 Clan na nGael 0-10.

Team List: R. Kearney; L. Glennon, E. McGrath, D. Casey; Killian Cox, T. McKenna, D. East (0-01); R Hanmore, C Feely; Mark O’Connor (0-01), Marc O’Connor, O. Cregg; C. Goldrick (0-03 - 2 frees), D. Smith (1-03 - 1 penalty, 3 frees), C. Deery;

Substitutes: M. O’Donohoe for Deery and D Flanagan for Marc O’Connor.
