The Well & M Kerins Intermediate Ladies - Connacht Quarter Final

It was a tough contest against St Mary’s (Sligo) in miserable conditions on Saturday. Buckets of grit, determination, and a lot of heart were poured onto the field by our Ladies to ensure that they would close the game in the lead.

Despite the strong winds we started out strong with a goal from H Kerins. Our opponents were quick to retaliate low and hard at the far end. Soon after, a lovely lofty chance for A Feely was fisted into the back of the net by M McKeon - and that was just the first 10 minutes! As the rain began to trickle, so too did the scores for St Mary’s, at the break our counterparts led 3.02 - 2.02.

There was a slow start to the second half, but after a goal chance was disallowed, our Ladies knew they needed to dig deep to get this game across the line. Turnovers partnered with high levels of possession amongst our forwards began to pay off towards the turning point of the second half - and then the free's began to flow. We were all square at 27mins, and as the sideline held their breath entering injury time, another point each for A Feely and M Ward sealed the deal.

Full time score in Kent Park:

Boyle - 2.09

St Mary’s - 3.04

Team List: S Moran, N Beirne, I King, S Kerins, S Keenahan (C), R Cox, S Wynne, R Wynne, C Cregg, M McKeon (1.00), M Ward (0.02), G Flanagan, N Regan, A Feely (0.06 - 5f), H Kerins (1.01). Sean Daly Memorial Cup

Boyle LGFA hosted nine teams from six clubs at the Abbey Park today as part of the U12 Girls blitz in honour of the late Sean Daly, a founding member of the club. It was a pleasure to have Ger with us to present the cup and share some words of wisdom with the next generation.

Well done to all of the teams that participated - Kilglass / Kilmore, St Croans, St Ronan’s / St Michael’s, Shannon Gaels, Western Gaels. We saw some great displays of football and it is our hope that each player had a chance to develop a skill or learn something new over the course of the day.

The Semi-Finals saw St Croans meet Boyle and Shannon Gaels meet Kilglass / Kilmore - both of which went into extra time with great excitement from the sidelines. In the end, Kilglass / Kilmore met our girls in the final - the legs were tired and the rain was en route, but both teams fought with big hearts until the final whistle when Boyle were named the victors.

Huge thanks to all of our refs, volunteers, Boyle LGFA Committee and John Brennan for their help in coordinating the day, and special thanks to Ger Garvin for representing the Daly family.

MATCH REPORTS

The Well & M Kerins Intermediate Ladies

Congratulations to The Well and M Kerins Construction sponsored Intermediate Ladies who defeated St. Ciaran's in the Championship Final on Saturday evening on a scoreline of 3.14 to 4.04 in Ballyleague. After two final appearances in the previous two years, Boyle produced a brilliant performance to finally capture the intermediate title and gain promotion to the Senior Championship for 2023. Entirely well deserved celebrations for all involved.

Boyle held a five-point lead at the interval. St. Ciaran's, to their credit, responded well in the second half, eating into the Boyle lead. Two quick-fire goals from the South Roscommon club reduced the margin. However, Boyle remained calm and tagged a few more scores of their own to see out the game and ensure the Intermediate Championship would reside in Boyle for the winter. Boyle will now progress to the Connacht Intermediate Championship with details to be confirmed. Finally, the Club wishes a smooth recovery to St Ciaran’s player who was injured in the first half.

Team: S. Moran; N.Beirne, I. King, S. Kerins; S. Keenehan, R. Wynne, S. Wynne; R. Cox, M. Ward, G. Flanagan; A. Feely (2.08), K. Harrington, H. Kerins. With: R. Johnson, M. McKeon, A. Roddy, K. Roddy, M. Brogan, C. Byrne, E. Scally, C. Mac Dermott, S. Meehan, L. Downes, A. O'Dowd, C. O'Dowd. Management: Vincent Flanagan, Michael Kerins, Pat Leonard, Damien Regan.

McGovern Civils Senior Men

Our Senior Men made history yesterday by progressing to our first County Championship Final since 1927. The lads fought hard and left everything on the pitch during the rough and tumble encounter with St Brigid’s in Dr Hyde Park on Sunday - leaving the pitch on a scoreline of 1.12 - 0.12.

The weather was against us in the first half and our opponents took advantage with 2 frees and 3 points from play straight off the bat. We were hungry for the ball and the pressure on Brigid’s across the field was immense. Daire Cregg opened the scoring with a point from play against a strong wind. Soon after he was fouled off the ball and Cian McKeon popped it over. Then followed the defining moment of the first half, Sean Purcell broke down a kick out to himself and after a nifty one-two to himself the ball was with Daire - and he was dragged down and awarded a penalty - Donie Smith is no stranger to this position and booted it in the back to make it a level game. The game was left at 1.03 - 0.09 at the break - still all to play for.

It was all Boyle in the opening minutes of the second half - Donie opened scoring with a free from 50 yards after Enda was fouled, and he followed up quickly with another after an interception from Cian. Roch Hanmore did his thing and a mark from the kick out provided a ball into Cregg for another point. The crowd held their breath when the ref signalled a penalty for Brigid’s - but after a consultation with his umpires the decision was overturned for a hop ball. With the score ticking on, Conor Flanagan went down and was replaced by Eden Kerins who got straight into it. Brigid’s made their way back into the game - but it wasn’t long until the Smith’s were pushing forward - Donie with two boomers and Enda running the pitch to be pulled down in front of the posts. We held composure with 4 minutes of added time and McKeon had the last point of the game with a free.

Hodson Bay Senior Quarter Final

McGovern Civils Senior Men

Our Senior Men have progressed to the Semi-Final in the Championship after a battle against Michael Glaveys in Dr Hyde Park on Sunday, final score: 1.11 - 0.09.

The game was played in good conditions, there was hardly a breeze but the pitch was greasy causing quite a stir throughout the game as players from both sides lost their footing leading to turnovers. Although Glaveys opened scoring in the first half, our lads took control of the scoreboard for the remainder of the first half. Along with his 4 frees in the first half, C McKeon scored the only goal of the game after a low ball from E McGrath was rocketed towards the full-forward line. Combined with a point from D Cregg and a mark from D East, the halftime score was 1.06 - 0.04.

Once again, Glaveys opened scoring after the break, but they meant business, quickly adding three consecutive points from play to their tally. What should have been a game-defining moment, they also received a penalty midway through the half - but it was popped over the bar - much to their side-lines dismay. Our strength in the air stood to us, and with countless marks on both ends of the field, the ball was worked well throughout the pitch.

We’re now set to play St Brigid’s in the Semi-Final of the Championship on Sunday, October 9 at 4.15pm in Dr Hyde Park. The other semi between Roscommon Gaels and Strokestown will run ahead of this with throw in at 2pm. Best of luck with your preparation's lads! Special word to the Chairman David Kelly on keeping the world updated and entertained on the twitter machine!

Team List: R Kearney, L Glennon, C Flanagan, D Casey, T McKenna, S Purcell, D East (0.02 - 1m), R Hanmore, E Smith, K Cox, E McGrath, C Feely, D Cregg (0.02), D Smith (0.01) & C McKeon (1.06 - 4f). Subs used: C Goldrick for Cox, E Kerins for Hanmore and J Moran for East.

Senior Championship Round 2 in Ballyleague

The McGovern Civils sponsored Boyle went in search of back-to-back wins in Ballyleague, but it wasn’t going to be easy playing Faithleachs who were very much in their game against Clan na nGael and a lot to prove after making the jump up from Intermediate last year and winning a Connacht .

Faithleachs’ started this game on the forefront and put in a huge first half performance leading 9 points to 5 at the break. With a slight wind in the second half Boyle started to claw back the 4-point lead and levelled  9 points apiece going into the final quarter. Faithleachs’ then pulled away again kicking 3 points ahead. However, Donie scored a goal from an Evan McGrath Pass equalising again. Both teams swapped points again and were level in injury time (6 min) with one play left. Cian McKeon got on the end of a Sean Purcell Pass and was fouled on the 45 m line and kicked the resulting free in a pulsating encounter. Best wishes and speedy recovery to Oisin Cregg who had to leave the field of play after a head injury.

Team Rob Kearney ,Luke Glennon, Conor Flanagan, Evan McGrath, Tadgh McKenna, Dylan East, Roch Hanmore, Cathal Feely, Oisin Cregg, Sean Purcell, Mark O’Connor, Donie Smith, Cian McKeon & Colly Goldrick.

Subs used Jack Moran for Colly Goldrick; Enda Smith for Mark O’Connor, Killian Cox for Oisin Cregg Eden Kerins for Dylan East.

Final Score 1-13 to 0-15 points

This leaves Boyle and Clan on 4 points after 2 rounds with both teams playing each other in the Hyde on Saturday week for First and Second places.  Throw in is on the 3rd of September (Saturday at 6.30)

Junior Championship Rd 2

The Cooney Motors Sponsored Boyle Juniors played Strokestown away in round 2 of the Junior A Championship. Leading by 2 points going into the break with a good first half performance Boyle just couldn’t convert the goal chances and were left with too much to do losing out on a score line of 1-13 to 11 points. Very good performance by Marc O’Connor, Joe Sweeney and Liam Casey. This leaves it with all to do against Table toppers St Michaels in the final round next Friday night in Boyle on the 2nd of September.

Thanks to all the support over the weekend and hope to see you all out again!

Around the Club

- Our Nordson Medical U14 girls have finished off their competitive games for what was a largely successful season for the team. Their season got off to a slow start with defeats to Roscommon Gaels and St Barry’s in the first two rounds of the league. But following this, the team went on to record five wins on the trot to win the division 3A league final, beating St Barry’s in a very competitive and entertaining game in the final. They continued their winning streak by winning their first 2 rounds of the Championship against Oran and Castlerea before losing their third-round to St Barry’s. The team went on to play St Brigid’s in a hugely competitive quarter final and unfortunately lost out to a strong St Brigid’s side. Well done to all the girls for their fantastic achievements in the 2022 season and thanks to all the managers and parents who supported them on their journey. The team consisted of a panel of 30 players who all contributed to the success of the team in 2022. The very best of luck to the girls as they continue their football into 2023.

McGovern Civils Senior Men

Our McGovern Civils Senior Men made the ideal start to their Senior Championship campaign with a four-point victory over Western Gaels at Abbey Park on Friday evening. Boyle had the perfect start - scoring three goals and two points to Western Gaels two points in the opening fifteen minutes. Daire Cregg scored two goals and a point, while Donie Smith raised the third green flag. Dylan East scored Boyle’s other point. Following a Western Gaels free, further points from Cian McKeon and Donie Smith stretched the margin further as Boyle held a 3.04 to 0.3 lead at half-time.

Western Gaels began the second half the stronger scoring a goal and a couple of points. However, midfielders Roch Hanmore and Cathal Feely began winning the middle sector which provided Boyle the platform to wrap up the victory. Cian McKeon (4) and Daire Cregg increased their personal tallies which insured the Frenchpark-based side could not claw back the margin. 3 further points from Daire Cregg and a brilliant strike from distance from Colin Goldrick ensured victory for Boyle.

Team: R. Kearney; L. Glennon, C. Flanagan, D. Casey; T. McKenna, S. Purcell, D. East; R. Hanmore, C. Feely; C. McKeon, E. McGrath, O. Cregg; D. Cregg, D. Smith (C), C. Goldrick.

Subs used: K. Cox, M. O'Connor, and E. Kerins.

The Well & M Kerins sponsored Intermediate Ladies

The Ladies had a well-deserved win over Éire Óg on a beautiful Friday evening in Loughglinn to kick off their Championship campaign. Huge thanks to Kieran Feely as always for a well-written and enjoyable write-up of the game, read more on kieranfeelymedia.com.

This team is really starting to hit their stride with lots of young blood maturing into the squad nicely. They worked hard for each other from start to finish and they suitably rounded off the scoring at 5.16 to 1.08. The best is yet to come for this young team and we’re looking forward to seeing them progress this season.

 Team: R. Johnson, S. Kerins, I. King, N. Beirne, S. Keenehan (C), R. Cox, M. McKeon (0-01), G. Flanagan (0-1), R. Wynne (1-02), H. Kerins, A. Feely (1-08, one free), M. Ward (0-1), A. Roddy (2-01), K. Harrington (0-1), N. Regan (1-02).

Subs used: C. Roddy.

Cooney Motors Junior Men

The clash between our Cooney Motors Junior Men and our neighbours from Ballinameen in Round One of the Championship was highly anticipated - and it did not disappoint! It was clear that this game was set to be physical from the start, and it was a great learning curve for our younger players. David Flanagan popped 3 points, and Mark O’Donohoe, Colin O’Sullivan and Niall O’Donnell all kicked fine scores with the aid of the wind. At halftime, our men were on the up on a scoreline of 0.11 to 1.04.

Ballinameen found a gear and improved in the second half with 2 crucial goals with one from the penalty spot. There were fine displays from Tadhg Lowe, David Callaghan, Colin O’Sullivan, Niall O’Donnell and David Flanagan. Aaron Sharkey also had a huge clearance off the line in the dying moments. Boyle were 2 points down with minutes to go and found the goal they were looking for from a well-worked move assisted by Connor Deery and fisted into the net by Callaghan. With that we were a point up in injury time but Ballinameen got a free from midfield. They sent it in long, and it was flicked on and over the bar. And on that note came the final whistle, and both teams ended up sharing the spoils for the opening round. Final score from a sunny Nash Park in Frenchpark was 1.15 to 3.09.

Team: S. Garavan, N. Brennan (C), C. Beirne, J. Coyle, D. Valentine, D. Flanagan, L. Casey, K. Cox, T. Lowe, J. Sweeney, M. O’Donohoe, C. Deery, N. O’Donnell, C. O’Sullivan, M. O’Connor.

Subs used: D. Callaghan, A. Sharkey, S. Kane, L. McGrath, D. Duggan

Around the Club

Boyle GAA were delighted to receive sponsorship from an Anonymous donor towards the purchase of a new set of training gear for the Senior Mens team. We chose to highlight the GAA healthy club initiative and the Planet Youth project on the tops as the donor was concerned about the increased normalisation of substance abuse in society, and in particular, in the GAA family. Planet Youth is a public health initiative currently operating in Roscommon, Mayo, and Galway. It’s based on the highly successful Icelandic primary prevention model which uses an innovative approach to reduce underage substance use rates in Iceland, and it has helped to bring Iceland from the highest rate in the world to the lowest. The primary prevention approach will be used here to help improve health outcomes for all of our school-going population. Thanks to Emmet Major, the Planet Youth Coordinator, who joined us in the Clubhouse to speak with the Senior Team about the project. Boyle GAA are delighted to support such a positive undertaking of this nature. We encourage you to view further information about the project which can be found at www.planetyouth.ie.

- It was a pleasure to host the ZuCar LGFA All Ireland Minor ‘B’ Championship Semi Final between Sligo and Longford on July 20th. Thank you to everyone that helped in getting the pitch and grounds prepped ahead of the game including members of the Boyle LGFA and Boyle GAA Committees.

O’Rourke Cup Final - Match Report

Congratulations to our McGovern Civils Senior Men following their three-point Division 1 League Final victory over Western Gaels in Ballinameen on Sunday afternoon.

Boyle made the brighter start to the game, with Donie Smith (2) and Cian McKeon (a mark) ensuring a three-point lead after just five minutes. Western Gaels responded with a free. A minute later, Boyle looked to be in for a certain goal, however, Western Gaels prevented Donie Smith’s goal-bound shot from hitting the back of the net and sent the ball out for a 45. Cathal Feely’s resulting 45 gave Boyle a three-point advantage once more. A Western Gaels free was sandwiched between two Colin Goldrick points on 15 minutes. A point apiece from Niall Higgins and Luke Hester for Western Gaels caused some worry for Boyle before some vital defending by Killian Cox and Oisín Cregg dispossessed a Western Gaels attack. Cregg’s pass found Colin Godrick, who was at his accurate best. Donie Smith (a free) and Dylan East rounded off the first scoring as Boyle held a three-point lead at half-time nine points to six.

Two Western Gaels frees early in the second half put the margin at one before Cian McKeon steadied the nerves of the large Boyle support with a well-taken free. Colin Goldrick raised the white flag once again before Oisín Cregg’s left-footed strike split the uprights. Western Gaels kept plugging away with points from play and placed balls. On 57 minutes, Luke Glennon’s hanging shot was gathered by Killian Cox on the 21-yard line. Cox was fouled for a free which Donie Smith made no mistake in converting.

Western Gaels once again scored from play as the game entered five minutes of injury time. They looked to be in for a certain goal two minutes into the additional period, however Conor Flanagan judged the final pass to perfection to prevent it. Play continued, and Boyle launched an attack of their own with Colin Goldrick winning and scoring a mark. Western Gaels had their last score of the game on 63 minutes before Boyle’s Goldrick (from play) rounded off his and the afternoon’s scoring with a delicate effort from 30 metres to ensure a three-point victory.
