Boyle GAA Club bade
farewell to its esteemed President during the week, with the passing of the
great John Joe Nerney. John Joe was Boyle’s only All Ireland Senior medallist,
having been a forward on the winning Roscommon team of 1944. He played with
Boyle from the thirties until the sixties and we were proud to have him as our
Club President for over 20 years. The Club cancelled all activities that were
scheduled for the weekend as a mark of respect. These included the U16
Championship game versus Clan na Gael and the O’Rourke Cup game versus
Strokestown, as well as the fortnightly Club Lotto draw. A minutes silence was
observed at the Division 5 Junior League game versus Abbey Park on Wednesday
evening, with the news of John Joe’s death emerging as the game was about to
commence. Thanks to all GAA people who participated with the Club in the guards
of honour for John Joe at both the removal and burial. The Club extends it
deepest sympathy to Mary, Gerry, Anthony, Raymond and Teresa and their
families. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis.
The Cooney Motors/
Cooney’s Centra Juniors had a convincing win over Kilglass Gaels in the
Division 5 League on Wednesday evening last. They are scheduled to meet the
same opposition in the Junior Championship Division 2 on Sunday next. They will
meet neighbours Ballinameen in the Division 5 League on this Wednesday at 8pm
in Abbey Park.
The U14 Division 1 team
is scheduled to play Oran in Rockfield on Thursday at 7.30, while the U14
Division 4 team is scheduled to play Roscommon Gaels in Lisnamult also on
Thursday at 7.30pm in their respective championships.
The U12 Division 4 team
will host Shannon Gaels in Abbey Park on Saturday next at 12 noon in the Spring
League.
The Defibrillator
training course which was scheduled for Wednesday evening last has been
postponed until the Autumn.
The rescheduled Club
Lotto draw will be held on Saturday night in Creightons with Team A in charge,
and the jackpot will be €9,100.
The Club Rossie draw has
been fixed for 11th July, so this is the last week to purchase a ticket.
Tickets are available from Club Officers.
The Club extends it
sympathy to the Lavin family Greatmeadow and Lisserdrea on the death of John
Lavin.
Congratulations are
extended to Club player Mark McGovern and his Bride Emma on their recent
wedding.
Best wishes are extended
to the Roscommon Minors and Seniors who will be in Championship action on
Friday and Saturday evenings respectively.
